     “Not Perfect”
Ken Medema is a Christian musician who was born blind. His parents taught him to play games, ride a bike, and even water-ski. It isn’t that they were callous to his condition of not being able to see, it’s just that they were more interested in affirming him as a person of worth, created in the image of God. With this inner peace, Ken Medema sometimes almost forgot that he had his disability.
One day he was walking across his college campus when he accidentally bumped into another student who also happened to be blind. The student said, “Hey, watch it! Can’t you see I’m blind?” Ken Medema apologized and said, “I’m sorry, but I didn’t see you” (no pun intended).
You know, as Christians, we bump into difficult situations, and that’s when our weaknesses are revealed. Usually, our reaction is to get defensive, react immaturely, and use our weaknesses as an excuse. And we will say things like, “After all, I’m not perfect, you know!”
The Apostle Paul said in II Corinthians 13:11, “Be complete . . . and the God of love and peace will be with you.” This idea of being “complete,” also suggests “adjust,” “mend,” or “repair.” Part of our Christian faith is to make the necessary adjustments in order to grow and be more faithful, just like good coaches make adjustments with their teams at the half time of games. God’s part is to keep on affirming His love for us regardless of our tendency to bump into things and have our weaknesses get the best of us. May God continue to work in us so that even when we are spiritually blind, -- we will still see be able to see His unconditional love in us.
