“Spirit of the Living God”

Yesterday was Pentecost Sunday, and as we come into Monday, some of you might be wondering, “Now what?” In other words, what are we supposed to do as this empowered church, with Spirit-filled empowered people? Well, the good news for us is that God promises to give us the abilities to accomplish the things He commands us to do. Jesus said, “The Holy Spirit, . . . will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you.” (Matthew 28:19-20)
So, what does that look like as we go about our daily lives. Well, here are a couple of examples. Have you ever been really upset with your kids, but instead of yelling at them, this time you spoke to them softly and patiently? That was the Holy Spirit! Have you ever had someone stick a knife in your back and then twist it to make it hurt even more, and you just wanted to strangle them, but that was overridden by your compassion for them? That was the Holy Spirit! Ever talk to a friend or co-worker about Jesus Christ, and you can’t even understand what you’re saying, and you’re getting all tongue-tied, and nothing you say is coming out right, but when you look in their faces they’re actually getting it? And you have no idea why. That’s the Holy Spirit! Ever read a Bible verse and think this doesn’t make a bit of sense, when all of a sudden, a light goes on over your head, and you say, “Hey, I like this! This is pretty helpful stuff!” That’s God’s Spirit!
Friends, Pentecost does not have to stop with yesterday. I am reminded of that short praise song that we have sung many times in worship at Chestnut Level, “Spirit of the Living God.” “Spirit of the Living God, fall fresh on me. Spirit of the Living God, fall fresh on me. Melt me, mold me, fill me, use me. Spirit of the Living God, fall fresh on me.” So as we begin the month of June, may God’s Spirit continue to operate and integrate as a holy force in our lives, and draw us closer to Jesus Christ.
