April 24 - Join Pastor John for a Daily Devotional

“Aging Gracefully”
Even at the age of 92, Jack LaLanne, the “Godfather of Fitness,” continued to work out every morning for two hours, one and half hours in the weight room and a half hour in the pool. He told Katie Couric, “I can’t afford to die. It will ruin my image.” Back in 1976 a news report came on saying, “Today on his sixty second birthday Jack LaLanne commemorated the Spirit of ‘76. He jumped into Long Beach Harbor and swam one mile…” And if the announcer had stopped there, you might have thought, “Wow! This guy’s in shape!” But then the report continued “… while towing 13 boats, representing the 13 original colonies, containing 76 people — while handcuffed and shackled.” Now we hear that and think, “What good is a great body if your mind is gone?” The truth is in our culture, we want to postpone the process of aging. Advertisers bombard us with commercials that convey the message that you have to feel young, look young, think young, act young, -- because only if you are young, are you worth anything. The comedian George Burns was once asked, “What’s the best thing about being in your nineties?” And he replied, “The lack of peer pressure.”
This Sunday, Nathan Kilgore, our Director for Youth and Young Adult Ministries, is going to be preaching on Ecclesiastes 12:1, which might be considered, as some of Solomon’s bittersweet reflections of the aging process. Solomon says, “Remember your creator in the days of your
youth..." Now who does Solomon address these words to? Is he speaking to a convention of AARP? No, his audience is the XBox and Playstation generation. “Remember your Creator in the days of your youth before the days of trouble come.” Ecclesiastes says, “Remember your Creator…” When? When you’re old and your body is falling apart? No! “In the days of your youth.” In your teen years, your twenties, thirties, and forties.
