“Chestnut Level Flock”

As a country, we used to be more of a nation of joiners. I have seen that most often when reading the obituaries of an older adult who has died. I am always impressed with the long list of clubs and organizations that these people belonged to. For example, one time I read an obituary which said that the person who died belonged to Sam’s Price Club. In flipping through my own wallet, I am a card-carrying member of Visa, AARP, Planet Fitness, Turkey Hill, and Giant. You may be a member of AAA, even though the only meetings you ever go to are attended by Tow Trucks. There is a list of Organizations that has over 125,000 entries, including the US Amateur Tug-Of-War Association, The Flying Funeral Directors of America, and the National Association of Conservationist Parking Lot Owners whose slogan is, “We Fight Weeds with Asphalt.”

Friends, you are part of an organization you did not choose, -- but one which chose you. You are probably thinking, “What is it that makes this gathering different from all my other gatherings during the week, -- at work, at school, at the exercise club, and the civic club?” The church is different from those other organizations, -- because we are gathered by God. And you and I are gathered by God to implement His purpose for history. Listen to how Jesus says it. “Fear not little flock. For it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom” (Luke 12:32). And so friends, I want to invite you to “gather” with us as the body of Christ in some of the new ways we have created, -- and receive the blessing that God has given to his flock, -- Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church.
